The Lord does whatever he pleases,
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all the depths.
Psalm 135:6
Happy late Monday afternoon, everyone! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and healthy :) I spent all day in an online waiting room attempting to purchase The Child from Build-a-Bear. Sad spoiler alert: I did not get one :( But that's not important, because we've got to chat about the first verse in our Sovereignty of God study!
When I first studied this verse, I realized one thing: God knows best in all situations. That is why Mother Gothel is on your screen--instead of mother knowing best, OUR HEAVENLY FATHER KNOWS BEST! Take peace in that, my friends, even amongst a pandemic. He knows what He's doing!
So, let's dive in! The psalmist here talks about how God does whatever He wants to do. You might be wondering, but where's the peace in that? So what, God's got all freedom in decision making? The answer lies in His character. Look at the verses around this one:
For I know that the Lord is great;
our Lord is greater than all the gods.
The Lord does whatever he pleases
in heaven and on earth,
in the seas and all the depths.
He causes the clouds to rise from the ends
of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain
and brings the wind from his storehouses.
Psalm 135:5-7
1. God is the greatest thing ever, absolutely, infinitely in the entire universe. Isn't that cool? If I still haven't got ya, here's the deal: we know from the rest of scripture that God is a righteous, loving, amazing Father. And from this verse, we know that He is the greatest being in existence. So, if He has the ability to do whatever He wants, that whatever He wants just so happens to be righteous, loving, and amazing as well.
Big Idea #1
When God does whatever He pleases, He is doing what is BEST for us! God sees the big picture--He knows what we need, even when we don't.
2. God is in control of every element ever, absolutely, infinitely in the entire universe. I love verse 7 because it shows God's awesome power. We cower during thunderstorms, right? My chubby cats run and hide under the couch. But, imagine this: God is holding that storm in His hand. He dictates the weather--it bows to Him! God makes the clouds move across the sky, God brings the lightning and the wind.
Big Idea #2
God is sovereign over every element of life, the good, bad, and the ugly.
Time to connect decisions and weather:
God knows what's best for us + He controls every aspect of life =
TRUST HIS DECISIONS, EVEN IN THE STORM.
God is SOVEREIGN in that He makes decisions that are the best for His children, and that He controls what seems giant to us. So remember, that even though we are cooped up in our houses fighting a daunting, scary, invisible enemy, God is working for our benefit, and this disease isn't bigger than Him!
I hope that truth can give you some peace today! Whatever is weighing on you during this time, let it go to the Father--He's got you, my friend.
